Breaking news on the breakup of a mountain and the latest breakout of war

Two videos report some interesting confirmation today of my weekend Deeper Dive, where I hypothesized that the extremely rare event of an entire mountain peak breaking off in Tibet caused the Nepal catastrophe when it slide down into the river followed by the glacier that was wrapped around it, damming the river and setting up a massive flood. Since I published that piece, scientists are now leaning toward the idea that the entire peak broke off first, not the glacier (a far more common event); and one video below explains why something so unusual is likely.

A massive earthquake in this same area occurred back in 2015. The video shows the earthquake. It shook the mountains so hard that it cause numerous immediate landslides, you can even see large clouds of dust rising from avalanches right behind the same Nepal-China border crossing building that has been highlighted throughout the latest event. For months thereafter, a higher-than-usual number of landslides plagued the region, and the video reports that cracks were seen in mountains, which had opened up in the earthquake.

It’s likely the cracks I showed in my Deeper Dive had been around long before that, but the major quake made those weak spots worse. The video even seems to suggest that. It also notes lots of major blasting around the region of the mountain that fell by the Chinese who are building a lot of hydro projects and roads in that part of Tibet. The video suggests it’s also possible that the shocks from blasting may have weakened existing cracks from the earthquake as the final trigger to the peak’s collapse or possible road work, cutting into the mountain’s flank, may have undermined the already unstable peak above.

The video shows some still shots in the half hour before the peak failed, captured by a hiker, who reported huge rumbling sounds and photographed clouds of dust rising around the base of the peak, as though smaller tumbling rocks were beginning to land at the base or the base was cracking as the mountain was beginning to give way. (He did not, however, capture the moment the peak cracked off and slid half an hour later .)

War breaks out

Speaking of things breaking lose, hot war broke out in Iran again when the US blew up Iranian vessels that were attempting to re-lay mines in the region that US just announced it had fully cleared. That resulted in Iran retaliating by blowing up major parts of US bases in Jordan. That resulted in Trump saying he will retaliate with more blowing up of Iran, again making one of his favorite threats of possibly seizing an island. To which Iran said, essentially, “Do that, and we’ll retaliate again.”

As could easily be expected, oil shot back up, taking North Sea Brent over $91/bbl and US WTI over $85. The president quickly announced the Pentagon (not sure why the “Pentagon” and not just the “US government”) will be getting 35% of Venezuela’s oil, which the US will be placing back into its Strategic Petroleum Reserves.

That announcement may be what cracked the price of oil back down to a little over $90 for Brent. It undoubtedly also made for another nice White House insider trade opportunity, a routine activity that has been hitting the news these days.
