Bunga Bunga Billionaires Rule the Democratic World
It seems the world loves billionaires for political leaders; so, the more scandalous they are, the more likely they are to get elected!
Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian billionaire infamous for his “bunga bunga” orgies, died at age 86 this weekend. I believe he held office as Italy’s prime minister more times than any other man. The major and multiple sex scandals and conviction did nothing to hold him back because apparently people love testosterone-overflowing leaders, especially rich ones.
George Soros, America’s most hated billionaire by the Right, has just handed his billionaire empire over to his son, and The New York Post reports that very few private citizens have as much access to the White House as the Son of Soros. Because the White House loves its billionaires, too! Cowabunga! Who would have guessed?
And speaking of billionaires — particularly one not liked by the Whited House at all — Trump’s own scandals as a highly-juiced, sexed-up billionaire have done nothing but boost his fundraising and support. However, Republican leaders are increasingly speaking out against him over the less sexy handling of top-secret documents, and it is not just the few who are running against him. The one most in the news at the moment is Trump’s former attorney general, Bill Barr, the Republican party’s top conservative legal expert. Barr made a number of interesting comments about Trump’s latest indictment. (Presidential indictments seem to be assured of monthly new runs now.)
Based on Barr, Trump may have bunga-bunga bungled it this time, or will the Teflon Don pull through and even become president again, his allure heightened by the scandals and wealth that continue to overflow around him? If so, he may be the first president to rule from prison, and that will be interesting, except that I’m sure he will commute his own sentence and make pardoning himself his first act if he is re-elected.
Ah, the fun of American politics, but it doesn’t look different anywhere else in the world! Even Putin is, in real terms, a high-testosterone, horse-riding, bear-busting billionaire!
Before we get into Barr’s words, let me point out that, while Barr has had his own infamous battles with Trump, which ended with his resignation, he has also spoken out clearly on behalf of Trump on other major legal cases. So, he seems to be an impartial critic who runs by his own conscience and legal understanding when it comes to matters of law. On the one hand, he resigned as AG based on what he couldn’t do at Trump’s behest in good conscience and did so with class. On the other hand, he stood up for Trump during the Robert Mueller investigation, and got roundly criticized for it. More recently he pointed out just how much of witch-hunt Alvin Brag's scandalous hush-money case really is, doped up with all kinds of counts for essentially the same questionably illegal (if ever even proven) offense.
So, Barr cannot easily be broadsided as just being anti-Trump now that he is bringing stark criticism against Trump and the GOP (for its defense of the Don) over the handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago on Fox News this weekend. Barr stated that his old boss is in serious trouble — if “even half” of what is laid out in the indictment against him is true.
“I mean, it’s a very detailed indictment, and it’s very, very damning.”
Barr went on to take a flamethrower to Trump’s claims that he is being politically persecuted.
“This idea of presenting Trump as a victim here or a victim of a witch hunt is ridiculous,” Barr said. “Yes, he’s been a victim in the past. His adversaries have obsessively pursued him with phony claims. And I’ve been at his side defending against them when he is a victim. But this is much different. He’s not a victim here. He was totally wrong that he had the right to have those documents. Those documents are among the most sensitive secrets that the country has. They have to be in the custody of the archivist. He had no right to maintain them and retain them….”
“He’s been angry with me for a while,” Barr said. “But you know, I defended the president on … Russia-gate. I stood up and called out (Manhattan District Attorney) Alvin Bragg’s politicized hit job. And I have spoken out for 30 years about the abuse of the criminal justice process to influence politics. But this is simply not true. This particular episode of trying to retrieve those documents, the government acted responsibly. and it was Donald Trump who acted irresponsibly.”
Barr also accused Republican leaders of spouting big lies by trying to defend Trump as a victim, clarifying the differences between other presidents who had some classified material in their possession as well as Trump’s former vice president. They are several: The sheer quantity of material taken makes any of the other offenders look like a bug on the windshield of Trump’s document-hauling semi. The manner in which many witnesses point out Trump tried to hide evidence for months on end by moving evidence in bulk quantities again and again to obstruct justice. The rapidity with which other presidents by comparison tried to hand over all material sought by US archivists as soon as notified. And the cavalier way in which material was strewn all over Mar-a-Lago in huge amounts and even scattered on the floor in ballrooms and bathrooms that were not even under lock and key. (Not that a garage is much better; but it’s not a ballroom for billionaires either where the right membership money could buy you a front seat at the stage (literally) displaying America’s top secrets that were even advertised by Trump’s own waving hand as he boasted that he had them and knew they were still classified!)
America’s simultaneously top-favorite and most-hated billionaire — with the exception of George Soros (where who hates and loves that particular democracy-busting billionaire is merely flipped) — has a tough case to prove, according to Barr this week … and Republican lawyer Jonathan Turley last week. However, the Teflon Don also scored a lucky non-stick victory by getting the one presiding judge in the entire nation who has already proven herself to be the Pam on his frying pan where some of her efforts to help him slide past prosecutors were thrown out by other judges.
If Trump is not held guilty, half of America will cry fowl because his own appointed judge, they will say, was biased. If Trump is held guilty, however, it will be difficult for his protectors to claim the case was rigged against him. If there is one thing Judge Aileen Cannon is not going to allow in her court room, it is letting any bias in the case against Donald Trump stick.
